    The City of Nelsonville is accepting applications for Police Officers. The City is building an eligibility list for potential vacancies. Police Officers must possess an O.P.O.T.C. Certification on or before the test date. A photo I.D. is required to gain admittance into the test. Applicants must pass a Civil Service Test. The test will be given on December 10,2020 at 6:00 pm in the Nelsonville Council Chambers located at 211 Lake Hope Drive, Nelsonville, Ohio.

    Application packets may be obtained at the City Auditors Office, 211 Lake Hope Drive, Nelsonville, Ohio, from 8:00am-4:00pm, Monday-Friday, beginning October 26, 2020 ending November 16, 2020. Deadline to turn in Applications is Friday, November 20, 2020 by 4:00pm. A $20.00 fee will be charged for the application/exam packet and must be paid when picking up the packet.


  • Chief of Police Position Open

    The City of Nelsonville is a rural community, with a population of 5,100. The police department consists of 8 full-time, 2 part time officers and 1 clerk. The Chief of Police is appointed by the City Manager with the approval of council, and reports to the City Manager. The Nelsonville Police Department places strong emphasis upon providing quality services through a community policing philosophy.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    To be considered, candidates must have a minimum of 5 consecutive full-time years of service in law enforcement with a minimum of two years in an administrative position in a comparable or larger police department preferred. Candidates also must hold a State of Ohio Peace Officer Training Certificate. Because a high level of personal integrity and professional ethics is essential, a comprehensive background investigation will be conducted. The successful candidate must pass pre-employment testing which may include both written and psychological testing.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    Candidates with post high school education*, upper level management and leadership training, attendees of F.B.I. National Academy, Southern Police Institute, Certified Law Enforcement Executive (CLEE), Police Executive Leadership College (PELC) or Northwestern Staff and Command will receive additional consideration. Candidates with experience in management models such as Community Oriented Policing are highly preferred.

    Compensation:

    Salary for the position is $52,000.00 / $57,000.00. In addition, Nelsonville offers an excellent fringe benefit package.

    • Applicants must have a FF1 certification for entry level part-time Firefighter or FF2 certification for full-time Firefighter at the time of the exam.
    • Applicants must successfully pass a written civil service exam and per Ohio Revised Code 124.42, must be 18 years of age and not yet reached his or her 41st birthday by the date of the exam.

  • Part-Time Police Clerk Position Open

    The Nelsonville Police Department is accepting applications for a part-time Police Clerk. Eligible candidates must have a high school diploma or equivalent and be at least 21 years of age. The candidates must pass an FBI/BCI background check. The person must be trustworthy and dependable and be able to keep information confidential. Must have good interpersonal communication skills, the ability to multitask, basic computer knowledge and present themselves in a positive and professional manner.

    The duties include general clerical work, filing reports, copying reports, answering telephones, taking messages, collecting fines, issuing receipts and dealing with the public.

    Candidates can get an application in person at the Nelsonville Police Department located at 211 Lake Hope Drive, Nelsonville, Ohio or online at the City of Nelsonville website.     The Planning Commission of the City of Nelsonville has 1 open position available.

    • The Planning Commission shall consist of five (5) members serving overlapping terms of five (5) years each, provided that initial appointments under this Charter shall be as follows: One for a term of one (1) year, one for a term of two (2) years, one for a term of three (3) years, one for a term of four (4) years, and one for a term of five (5) years.
    • The Council, by ordinance or resolution, shall designate the Planning Commission to serve as the platting commission of the City, and the Commission shall have control of platting and shall recommend regulations to Council covering the platting of all lands within the City.
    • The Planning Commission shall recommend to Council, for the Council's adoption with or without revisions thereto, a comprehensive general plan or revisions thereto for the physical development of the City, which shall include, but not be limited to:
      • The location of public ways, property, bridges, utilities, buildings, parks, playgrounds, bikeways, and recreation areas.
      • The comprehensive general plan shall show the existing school locations in the City and shall show the projected locations of all new schools as determined by the governing board of the appropriate school district.
    • The Planning Commission shall prepare and recommend to Council such ordinances and resolutions as will promote the general welfare of the City and its inhabitants; recommend for the Council's approval a base map to be titled the "Official Map of the City of Nelsonville"; and exercise control over the subdivision of lands and the improvement or development thereof as authorized by the City's ordinances and resolutions.
    • In the performance of its functions, the Planning Commission may enter upon any land in a lawful manner to make examinations and surveys, and place and maintain necessary monuments and markers thereon.
