    The Municipal Civil Service Commission of the City of Nelsonville has two (2) open positions available.

    • The commission serves in the manner provided for in Section 124.40 of the Ohio Revised Code and rules and regulations of the Nelsonville Municipal Civil Service Commission relative to civil service in the City of Nelsonville.
    • For a term of one (1) year.
    • The commission meets on an as needed basis.

  • Seeking Applicants for City Manager

    The City of Nelsonville is seeking people interested in filling the open position of City Manager. Nelsonville is a community in rural Athens County, Ohio with a population of 5,100, and is seeking people interested in filling the open position of City Manager. The City Manager is the chief executive and administrative officer of the city and is responsible to the City Council for the administration of all City affairs placed in his charge.

    Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in public or business administration with a master’s degree preferred; and 5 years of progressively responsible public management experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Because a high level of personal integrity and professional ethics is essential, a comprehensive background investigation will be conducted.

    Compensation: Salary for the position is $52,000.00 / $75,000.00. In addition, Nelsonville offers an excellent fringe benefit package.

  • Seeking Chief of Police Applicants

    The City of Nelsonville is seeking people interested in filling the open position of Chief of Police. The Chief of Police is appointed by the City Manager with the approval of the council, and reports to the City Manager. The Nelsonville Police Department places strong emphasis upon providing quality services through a community policing philosophy. 

    Minimum Qualifications: To be considered, candidates must have a minimum of 5 consecutive full-time years of service in law enforcement with a minimum of two years in an administrative position in a comparable or larger police department preferred. Candidates also must hold a State of Ohio Peace Officer Training Certificate. Because a high level of personal integrity and professional ethics is essential, a comprehensive background investigation will be conducted. The successful candidate must pass pre-employment testing which may include both written and psychological testing.

    Preferred Qualifications: Candidates with post high school education*, upper level management and leadership training, attendees of F.B.I. National Academy, Southern Police Institute, Certified Law Enforcement Executive (CLEE), Police Executive Leadership College (PELC) or Northwestern Staff and Command will receive additional consideration. Candidates with experience in management models such as Community Oriented Policing are highly preferred.

    Compensation: Salary for the position is $52,000.00 / $75,000.00. In addition, Nelsonville offers an excellent fringe benefit package.
